On the History of Rus' and Russia: A Dialogue with a Professional Historian (18.10.2021)
A street dialogue between Vitaliy Dribnytsia and a Russian-speaking interlocutor who presents himself as a professional historian (he holds a degree in the field and teaches). Using the example of “the first capital of Rus’,” the historian shows that the question itself is framed anachronistically, and explains from what point the rulers of Rus’ can be confirmed by independent sources. The material complements the analysis of the myth that “Kyivan Rus’ never existed.”
Key moments
- 00:08 The concept of a "capital" is a phenomenon of the early modern period; "the first capital of Rus'" is an anachronistic question
- 00:44 Example: Madrid became the capital of Spain only under Philip II
- 02:21 The Primary Chronicle: accounts of Rurik and Oleh are legendary and cannot be cross-verified
- 03:12 Parallel sources (Byzantine, Arab, German, Scandinavian) confirm only Igor and onward
