A street dialogue between Vitalii Dribnytsia and a Russian interlocutor in the format of an improvised “lecture.” Dribnytsia lays out why the “Rurikid dynasty” is a later construct (the term is absent from the chronicle, and the name “Rurik” is rare in the princely line), where the verification threshold for the early Rus’ princes lies, and how Maksymovych in 1837 introduced the conventional name “Kyivan Rus’” into scholarship. A separate segment addresses Rus’ in the narrow chronicle sense according to Rybakov. The material complements the analyses “Kyivan Rus’ Never Existed” and “How Rus’ Became Russia.”

Key moments

  1. 04:51 The 'Primary Chronicle' contains no phrase 'the Rurikid dynasty'
  2. 05:02 The name 'Rurik' is unpopular in the princely line (3–4 princes) — indirect evidence that there was no Rurikid dynasty
  3. 06:30 The verification threshold: parallel sources confirm only Ihor onward, without Oleh and Rurik
  4. 26:52 Rybakov: 'Rus'' in the narrow chronicle sense — the Kyiv region, the Chernihiv region, part of Volhynia
  5. 28:21 Mykhailo Maksymovych (1837, the first rector of Kyiv University) proposed the name 'Kyivan Rus''
