A lecture by historian Iryna Petrenko (the “Historian Every Saturday” series) on Ukrainian women in the age of modernization. The article draws on the section about the empire’s language policy: the 1863 Valuyev Circular (a ban on Ukrainian-language printing and the closure of Sunday schools) and the way it was circumvented through Galicia — Yelyzaveta Skoropadska-Myloradovych funds the Shevchenko printing house in Lviv, out of which the Shevchenko Scientific Society later emerged. A source for the article on the Ukrainian language.
